Comichaus Meets: James McCulloch

Today we meet writer and editor James McCulloch.

Please introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

I am James McCulloch, the writer of City of Lost Souls, Little Girl Black, Kid Monkey, Karyn Shade, and Transylvanian Knights. I'm also an editor for Comichaus and The Grime.

I work with different artists on each project, Janine Van Moosel, Pedro Mendes, Paul Johnson, Jessica Byrne and most recently Johnny Cannon on Transylvanian Knights.

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

I was always really into comics as a young kid, I read everything from the Beano, Dandy, Oink!, and Hoot. Anything I could get my hands on really. I moved on to 2000ad and from there discovered American comics like Hellblazer, Sandman, Swamp thing, and Shade the changing man. Finding all the writers whose stories I loved in 2000ad doing comics in America meant I had instant go-to titles that I knew were going to be a high standard.
It helped that the local library stocked a lot of the American Graphic novels.

What do you think people see in your character(s), or the books in general, that has really drawn them in and kept them coming back for more?

I think people like my characters cause they're total bastards... but have something about them you can't help but love. It's the classic John Constatine style of loveable bastard

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

Being that they're bastards probably quite a lot. HA
The main thing that comes out is my sense of humour. Most of my characters are murderers so I hope it's not something I live through every night but black-out.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

I get a lot of inspiration from my dreams and nightmares. For my most recent comic, Transylvanian Knights it comes from a love of Universal and Hammer horror films.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of the comic and producing the final release?
Each comic comes with its own struggles. With Little Girl Black I struggled to find a printer due to the extreme content in the book. With City of Lost Souls, it's along term project so every issue hits new problems. You'd think it'd get easier and although some of it does, there are always unexpected bumps. I mean, last year I had Cauda Equina Syndrome which has affected my release schedule this year and getting titles out there.

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

Generally, my comics are horror with a black humour in them.

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

Coming up I have the next Karyn Shade story in Comichaus, City of Lost Souls #6, Kid Monkey #3, Transylvanian Knights #2, I'm also working on three new titles for the end of this year, beginning of next.
