Comichaus Meets: Darrell Thorpe

Today we meet creator, writer & artist, Darrell Thorpe.

Please introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

I’m Darrell Thorpe aka Forpe. I’m the creator & artist of the visually colourful world called "The FreeDoom Realm”.

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

There were a few, but right at the beginning it was; Scott Pilgrim & Lost at Sea by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Simply because it was the first comic series I read that the art and the narrative really resonated with me. Since then Scottie Young, Jim Mahfood, Mike Mignola, Jorge Corona & James Harren are pretty much the guys that inspire my work.

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

Quite a lot. I love colour & culture, so the world i am creating has a lot of sub level brands and underground crews etc. The phrases used in the comics are similar to how I talk. On a side note I think the main difference is that I have a few top level characters but I try to think of FreeDoom as a living breathing world with thousands of stories going on. So I hope i never hang on to heavily to one character.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

Quite a few places but i’d say probably cartoons and movies are the biggest thing that inspire me. I love comics but i think these inspire me to make my story telling bette; that and when i get to hang out with fellow creators and fans of my work, they always light a fire under my ass to more and better work haha.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of, and producing, the final release?

Perhaps the day job and life in general. Trying to fit in inking and colouring around general life stuff always takes some organising haha.

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

Not to take things seriously and above all have fun.

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

I have "Erol The Lost Tales", which follows on from Erol Vs Evil. This is available on my website but I am planning to collect the pages and put it on ComicHaus this year. Along side that I have completed the inks on a new book called Baron & The Kat. This is a big project that i am dying to get my teeth into the colours and letters. Hopefully that will be out this year.
