Comichaus Meets: Chris Sides

Today we meet creator & writer Chris Sides.

/media/blog/library/chris-sides.jpgPlease introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

I’m Chris Sides, I’m the writer of the recently released CLOSE through Comichaus. I was lucky enough to work with good buds Chris Travell - art - and Ken Reynolds - letters / editing / design.

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

I followed the big Marvel storylines between 2000 and 2010 where a lot of now-prominent creators were taking big risks with the material and through that, I discovered / followed a lot of their creator-owned stuff. All of it was influential in some way, as were a lot of the small press folks I chatted to at cons when I was getting started.

I’ve said this before, but OCEAN by Warren Ellis, Chris Sprouse and Karl Story was a prime example of what you can do with a sci-fi comics limited series - HUGE ideas in a small book

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

The characters are a bit of mishmash of me and people I know / stuff you pick up from the general public. A lot of the time I’m exploring things through the characters. Jared, the creepy protagonist from CLOSE, for example, is a reaction to / trying to fathom celebrity culture. The bits where he’s stalking celebrities are not me, they’re Travell*.

*For legal reasons, I must explain that this is a joke. Chris Travell is a stand up human being. Jared’s behaviour is actually modelled on Ken.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of ….. and producing the final release?

With CLOSE, it was hitting the deadline. The book was releasing at Thought Bubble 2018 - we knew it was going to be tight and Travell was working all hours at one point to get it done. It was a case of getting, literally, everything in place and ready, so that as soon as he was finished, it was off to Rich at the printers. I think it was just over a week turnaround between final files in and Thought Bubble. Saying that, CLOSE was one of the most organic books we’ve produced; flying by the seat of our pants all the way through produced some really interesting changes throughout production - happy accidents.

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

Don’t expect cute and cuddly.

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

I’ve just locked a script for Paul Moore, who I’m excited to be working with again. DARK MATTER III is scheduled for release this year and I’m working with Pete Woods and Ken  Reynolds on THE GUNRUNNER for Markosia - that should see the light of day towards the end of the year, with any luck.

As for CLOSE, I have an idea for something set in the same ‘universe’; a very, VERY distant cousin. The weird one that sits in the corner at family get togethers and stares at you awkwardly while eating a cold cocktail sausage.
