Collector Notes:
#1 (Sep 1963) Origin and 1st appearance of The X-Men (Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, Marvel Girl). 1st appearance of Professor X and Magneto. Jack Kirby cover and art. Note that most copies have an off white even cream coloured cover and the box in the top left is light or lime green. True high grade copies should have a white cover and a dark green top left corner.
The UK variant copy has the exact same contents and cover as the American edition apart from the price and cover date. There is also a single line in the indicia stating distribution by Thorpe and Porter. As with all these early UK editions of The X-Men (up to #7), the price circle/box says 9d (ninepence) instead of 12c (twelve cents) and the date area has no month.
All these comics were printed at the same time with the same paper stock but switching a different cover plate at the end of the print run. The date box is blank and there is a slight difference in the distributor information listed inside. It is thought that somewhere between 2 and 3% of the print run was UK variant editions. The story from X-Men #1 is reprinted in the British comic Fantastic #1 published by Power Comics.
