Comichaus Meets: Nicole Bates

Today we meet creator, writer & artist, Nicole Bates!

/media/blog/library/nicole-bates.pngPlease introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

Hi, my names Nicole, I’m an old person currently living the dream and creating the type of comics I’ve always  wanted to, in the old fashioned way of watercolours, my team is me and my partner Ian Loxam who is procrastinator stopper, kicker up my bum to get working, manager, multi media wizard and constant promoter!

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

The type of comics that inspired me include the classics from The Dandy to Garfield, in fact it’s the Garfield comics (which I used to cut out of papers and magazines and then stick into scrap books) that made me dabble in simple ideas and strips, but seeing a copy of Starslayer really made me see the beauty, the maturity and to my eyes the action that comics could achieve.

Being a really really new comic creator Emma Vieceli’s work is so so inspiring.

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

Hehehe this question made me chuckle because my first comic Anxiety Me! Is totally myself put on the page, I couldn’t put anymore of my personality into my drawings for that one.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

My inspiration for Anxiety Me! Came from the peace and silence you can get in animations from Studio Ghiblis work, I love that peace and really tried to get that across, that your mind follows the character from scene to scene in a quiet more impactive way, also with Leaf, the more simple work of the leaf being tugged by the wind.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of ….. and producing the final release?

Totally not knowing what we were doing, I mean I have never in a million years even imagined actually getting my comic in my hands and then selling it to people!

It was tough to get over self doubt, but the community as a whole has been so supportive. And I was so fantastically lucky to have LICAF support me by printing it. (Anxiety Me!)

I think you just have to go for it, everyone can create something amazing.

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

I only do stand alone comics and with Anxiety Me!........you need tissues! I never meant for it to be so sad, but people seem to find that it connects with them and brings on the tears. So maybe tissues and a cup of tea and biscuit for after!!

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

Well coming up I’m creating my first graphic novel, it’s going to take time but I’m really excited about it, it’ll be semi autobiographical story of my childhood with many many funny moments (I grew up in an actual zoo) and also hitting the hard topic of bullying. So I’m going for laughs, tears and information this time!
