Comichaus Meets: Mat Greaves

Today we meet creator & writer, Mat Greaves.

/media/blog/library/mat_greaves.jpg Please introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

I’m Mat Greaves, an animator, cartoonist and illustrator based in Manchester. I predominantly work as an animator for children’s TV and draw cartoons and comics in my spare time.

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

A few years back I bought “An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons & True Stories” by Ivan Brunetti, in which I found most of my now favourite cartoonists: Archer Prewitt, Daniel Clowes, Tony Millionaire, Kaz & Sammy Harkham.

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

I can’t say I relate all that much to Chip (I don’t drink coffee or smoke!), but his personality very much lines up with my sense of humour; characters that take themselves too seriously and don’t realise they’re being funny, or manic characters that go off on one.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

Noir films, unsurprisingly, and the numerous TV shows that have parodied them. I also remember watching a lot of “The Eric Andre Show” around the time I was writing Chip 1, which explains why he’s always diving about and smashing stuff. The art style was initially inspired by ‘50s UPA cartoons, but the characters ended up looking more fleshy as I tried to push the acting and make it more manic.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of ….. and producing the final release?

The main struggle is just finding the time to make comics. I usually take time off after a job to do one while eating into my savings. I would be making comics full-time if I could!

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

Chip McFitz is a wacky comedy noir, following the adventures of the titular coffee-addicted news reporter in 1940’s Los Angeles.

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

I am! I'm planning to have "Chip McFitz: Joint Fever" ready for Thought Bubble 2019. After that, I want to do a regular gag strip, as well as more gag cartoons and mini comics.
