Comichaus Meets: Daniel Brodie

Today we meet creator & writer, Daniel Brodie!

/media/blog/library/daniel-brodie.jpgPlease introduce yourself and your team (if you have one).

My name is Daniel - I am the creator and writer of Morgan's Organs comedy comic book series. Also on the team is lead artist, Robert Jennex, and colourist, Tyler Ketling. Rob and I also split the lettering.

What are some of the comics that inspired you to start creating your own? Any creators in particular?

I would say more of my inspiration comes from television - in particular, Rick & Morty. I really love how this show blends different facets of humour with a strong story and great characters. I try to do the same in blending comedy, conflict and character in Morgan's Organs.

I mostly follow indie comic book series, and it's inspiring overall to see the passion in the community. It's fantastic to see a small series continue to grow with each new story released.

How much of your own personality goes into your character(s)?

Good question, it's tough to say! I feel like my personality has in parts been shaped by my creative endeavours. Morgan's Organs has really allowed me to express the weird and wacky side of my humour and ways of thinking. I wouldn't say that I particularly try to channel my own personality in the characters, but there is definitely some inspiration from my own life experiences as someone who has gone to college and knows the sort of feelings, confusions and questions that we are faced with when growing up.

For the organs, the personality of the characters is really rooted in what the function of each organ is. I began by asking myself, "what sort of personality would you expect if a person had a similar life purpose as these organs?" Then, I either completely flipped expectations on its head and did something opposite and unexpected, or I stick to expectations and build further motivations into this character.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

The inspiration for Morgan's Organs really just came from a burning desire to have this series be a thing. When I first thought of it in 2013, I thought it was just a funny idea, but after thinking about it further and sharing the idea with some close friends, I really thought Morgan's Organs could have some legs. Soon, I would say it almost became an obsession to figure out the concept, characters and story. And now, I am driven by my end goal of making Morgan's Organs as a television series.

What struggles have you faced with the creation of ….. and producing the final release?

There's definitely been struggles of all sorts along the way - mostly on the personal side. The development of this series has been a mix of feelings - excitement (when I know I'm moving in the right direction), embarrassment (that I am even writing about a talking penis),  confusion (when trying to figure out the concept itself), disappointment, impatience, and more. Since this is an independent series, it really is wholly on me to be motivated to make this happen, while dealing with these feelings, and external pressures like finances and personal life.

My greater motivator really is my fans, and seeing that they continue to love the stories I am putting out. As long as I have a fan base that wants to see this series happen, I am motivated to keep pushing through the struggles.

What do fans need to know going into their first issue of your comic?

Morgan's Organs is a MATURE comedy series! There's no swearing... no nudity... but the series does include a talking penis character. So that should tell you enough about the sort of humour and themes we are presenting. Really, Morgan's Organs is meant to give a raw, honest perspective of what might be happening inside our bodies, but more generally, how we can use our bodies as a microcosm for portraying human nature. I like to think that while the purpose of the books is to be funny, it is also serves to tell us something honest about ourselves. If you like Ricky & Morty, or if you saw Inside Out and wish there that Pixar had an adult content division, you will love this series.

What have you got coming up in the future? Are you working on more issues?

I have so many storylines, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and more planned. The only things holding me back are time and money! Since our Kickstarter for Book 3 is already funded and we're on the way to hitting our first stretch goal, I am now getting ready to start writing Book 4 of the series. What we truly need in order to be able to produce Morgan's Organs faster is more fans to support our time spent on making books rather than putting bread on the table... or a publisher that will help bring us to the next level in the comic industry!
